Laser Engraving Blanks

If you engrave for a living, the blank matters as much as the machine. Clean, consistent hardwood gives you a crisp, repeatable burn. A knotty, uneven, or pre-coated board gives you scorch marks, blowouts, and rejects you can’t sell.

So that’s what these are. Hardwood blanks meant to go straight under your laser. No surprises.

Maple, cherry, walnut, all Canadian, and each one does something different on an engraving job.

Engravers love maple. Easy to see why. Pale and smooth, grain so tight and even it takes fine detail cleanly, and dark marks pop against the light background. Logos, lettering, fine line work, that contrast is the whole game.

Cherry runs darker and warmer, which some folks prefer for a softer, more rustic finished piece. Walnut goes fully the other direction, rich and deep, where the engraving reads as a light mark against a dark background. Different look entirely.

What Makes a Blank Engrave Well

What actually makes a blank engrave well? One word. Consistency.

A dense, even grain burns far more predictably than soft, wild-grained wood. Run fifty identical pieces for a corporate order and that uniformity is exactly what keeps the batch sellable. Cold-climate hardwood gives you the tight even grain. And it shows up clean and unfinished, no oil or coating muddying the burn.

Test Before You Run a Batch

Now some honesty, because results aren’t universal. Your machine drives everything. CO2 or fiber, your wattage, your settings, they all change the outcome. Test on a sample before you commit to a full run. Different species behave differently, and even two boards of the same wood can vary a little. That’s just natural wood being natural wood.
